A 12-year-old girl attempted to immolate herself at her residence in Bhandup on Thursday evening. The victim is believed to have been depressed by the boycott meted out to her by her schoolmates for the past two days.
The Bhandup police have not yet registered an FIR and are waiting to record the victim's statement, who is currently recuperating at Sion hospital.

According to the Bhandup police, the victim, a Std VII student at a school in the same suburb, lives in a chawl along with her parents. On Thursday, she got home from school while her parents were away at work. "She poured kerosene on herself and set herself ablaze. After a few seconds, when she was not able to bear the pain, she tried to douse the fire by wrapping a blanket around her," said an officer from Bhandup police station. "But when the blanket also caught fire, she started screaming and the neighbours came to her rescue and rushed her to the local hospital."

The child was later transferred to Sion hospital where she is currently recuperating with 45 percent burn injuries. The police said that in her statement, she said she had had a quarrel with one of her friends after which all her other friends stopped talking to her.

"She had narrated her problem to her father who assured her that he would accompany her to school and sort out the issue, but she asked him not to do that," said an officer.

The Bhandup police have made an entry and are probing the matter. "We are currently investigating the matter and necessary action will be taken at the appropriate stage," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone VII) Dr Vinay Rathod.
