A 12-year old Muslim girl has recently won the Gita Champions League contest for explaining the teachings of the scripture in the best possible manner. Maryam Siddiqui, the class VI Student secured first position from among over 3000 students who participated in this event which was organised by International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon) in January. The test which evaluates the participants knowledge about Gita is a multiple choice question test of 100 marks.

A student of Cosmopolitan High School, Mira Road, Maryam said that she has always been intensely curious about religions. "I have always been inquisitive about religions and I often read up on them during my free time. So when my teacher told me about this contest I thought it would be a good chance to understand what the book is about," said Maryam.

Maryam's parents supported her idea of participating in the contest. "Our family believes that one needs to respect and accept all religions. No religion preaches hatred or wrong", her proud father, Asif Siddiqui said.

Teachers at school are equally proud of Maryam's achievement and have praised her excellence in school exams and in the contest, too. The 12-year old won the prize on March 15 inspiring a lot of people amidst disturbances in the communal fabric in our society.
