Mumbai crime branch has identified at least a dozen spots across the city where drug peddling takes place in large number and the police are working on to bust these gangs.

Last month, city crime branch sleuths had busted a gang involving Nigerian nationals. At least 25 Nigerians had arrived in Wadi Bunder area of Dongri to peddle drugs. Over 80 policemen had conducted an operation and had arrested 2 Nigerians from the spot.

"Following the case wherein we had busted a gang that would sell drugs to people in Wadi Bunder area of Dongri, we have identified over a dozen spots in the city where drug peddling takes place where a gang of peddlers arrive and customers receive contraband from them," said joint commissioner of police, crime, Atulchandra Kulkarni.

While Kulkarni refused to elaborate on the functioning of the gang and reveal the spots where drugs are peddled, as the crime branch are working on to neutralise these gangs, police sources said that most of these places are isolated. "Peddlers choose dark and isolated areas for their operations so that they could not be identified by police patrolling party and also becomes easy for them escape if the police arrive," said a police officer.

On the intervening night of April 28 and 29, 80 policemen, including officers, initiated a combing operation at Wadi Bunder and Masjid Bunder area. Around 20 to 25 peddlers, all Nigerian nationals, arrived at Wadi Bunder post midnight and as the police began their operation, the peddlers started running away. They used stones on railway tracks as their weapons and pelted it on the police party. In the action that followed as many as eight policemen got injured. The police fired three rounds, but none got injured.

Two Nigerians were caught by the police. Later, three more Nigerians were arrested in the same case and were handed over to Dongri police for further probe. The police had seized over 50 grams of cocaine, cash and over ten mobile phones from the arrested persons.

"We have written to the Government Railway Police and Central Railway to illuminate the areas which the drug peddlers had used as entry and escape route during our combing operation last month," Kulkarni said.
