MUMBAI: Eleven-year-old Hamid Raza has been suffering from intermittent bouts of fever for the past seven days. Usually chirpy and energetic, the young lad has gone into a shell and has hardly spoken to anyone since then. A week ago Hamid, a student of class III of BMC’s Dharavi Transit Camp School, was allegedly paraded naked by his teacher in front of his schoolmates as punishment for picking up a fight with a fellow student.

Bilkis Azam, the teacher-in-charge that day (December 30, 2005), allegedly stripped him of his school uniform and paraded him in each class. Hamid was allegedly threatened to not reveal this to his parents, but they came to know about it from his classmates.

The experience has left Hamid traumatised, said his worried parents. He shows signs of psychological trauma. An aggrieved father Yaasen Ansar, said: “He has been ill from the day of the incident and has not been showing any signs of recovery. After the shameful punishment, Hamid has refused to go back to school. He has been recognised as a bright student.

He is like any other child, and therefore, cannot be so mischievous. For his misbehaviour, there were other ways to punish him. There was no need to give him such a heinous punishment. We fear that due to psychological trauma, he may commit suicide.” Even after the incident was brought to the attention of school authorities, no one had visited them, added Yaasen.

He has written a complaint to the State School Education Officer, BF Rehman, demanding strict action against Bilkis Azam.

Yaasen also stated that they would move the Bombay High Court if the state education department failed to take action against her.

Rehman said, “We have sent our education inspector to conduct an inquiry. The state education department will initiate strict action against the teacher if she is found guilty.”

Bilkis Azam, however, denied the allegations. Questioned by school Superitendent Shamin Butt, Azam said Hamid had turned violent. She said: “I feared that he would kill the boy from class I. I did not parade him naked, but had just removed his shirt and took him around two classrooms.”
