About 100 people came together on Thursday to carry out a major clean-up drive and demolition drive at the Versova beach, which was encroached by shanties since the last couple of years. About 40 staff from the police, 40 staff from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and about 10 from the suburban collector's office jointly took part in the drive that went on for more than six hours.

More than 100 shanties, 20 illegal methi farms and 30 borewells were demolished in the drive and 30 illegal borewells were demolished in the drive. The beach came under the jurisdiction of the state government. The debris generated during the drive would be cleared by the BMC in the next two days.

BJP MLA from the area, Ameet Satam , who initiative the action, informed that a week ago, he had carried out a joint inspection of the area, along with assistant municipal commissioner of K west ward Parag Masurkar and suburban collector Shekhar Channe, at the instance of the local residents, who could not use the beach.

"I am drawing up a comprehensive plan to develop the beach on the lines of the Juhu beach, so that residents as well as tourists can visit the spot. Moreover, there will be continuous police patrolling the area," Satam said.

The drive was significant for Versova residents, who could never go to the beach because of the filth and the stink.
