Last year, prime minister Narendra Modi spoke to students across the country on Teachers' Day, emphasising the importance of giving teachers their due respect. This message does not seem to have come through in the state. Around 100 teachers who were honoured for their services on the occasion last year, are yet to receive their cash prize of Rs 1 lakh each.

On September 4 last year, the government announced that selected educationists would be awarded 'Best Teacher' certificates along with the cash prize by the state's education department. However, five months have passed and there is no sign of the prizes.

The education department earlier used to award two increments to teachers who were declared best in their service. This was stopped by the government in 2009, and till 2013, the teachers were only given certificates. In this period, around 600 teachers were awarded. Last year, the system of cash prizes was started, leading to murmurs about whether the teachers who were awarded between 2009 and 2013 were also entitled to cash prizes.

The best teachers are chosen from across the state from primary and secondary sections.

Anil Bornare, president of Shikshak Parishad, Mumbai region said, "It is an insult to those teachers who are certified as best teachers and declared Rs 1 lakh cash prize, but not sent the amount yet. With this lethargic attitude of the education department, the Teachers Association has demanded that the prize be sent to the teachers immediately. The prize was supposed to be sent to teachers in October last year. But it's almost five months. Our teachers representative and member of legislative council Ramnath Mote have sent a letter to the education minister on this issue. He has also demanded an answer about those teachers for whom a cash prize was not declared between 2009 and 2013."
