10 year in jail for man who attacked woman on local train

The sessions court on Monday convicted a 40-year-old man for robbing and attacking 27-year-old woman in the first class compartment of a local train on April 19, 2013. Judge U B Hejib sentenced Chandrakant Vaidya to 10 years of imprisonment. Five witnesses testified in the court against Vaidya.

According to the prosecution, Charni Road resident Swati Karnalkar was going home from her workplace in Andheri when the incident took place. She accidentally boarded a fast local, which does not stop at Charni Road, and got down at Churchgate.

From the terminus Swati got into a slow local about 7.45 pm. However, at the same time, a man jumped into the coach and asked Swati to hand over her money and mobile phone. He attacked her with a knife when she raised an alarm.

Women in the adjacent second class compartment alerted the police, leading to man's arrest. He was later identified as Cuffe Parade resident Vaidya.
