The wait for south bound Kherwadi flyover on the Western Express Highway has just got longer by 10 days. Now, the bridge is likely to get ready by June 20.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) had initially declared that the bridge will be ready for motorists by May end, but the very same deadline got revised to June 10, due to a minor defect detected in one of the pillars during construction.

The two deadlines ensured great relief to motorists prior to monsoon commences in Mumbai. Monsoon usually reaches the city by June 10.

Now the deadline has been rescheduled yet again. "In the next 8 to 10 days the flyover will be ready for motorists to ply on," informed UPS Madan, metropolitan commissioner of the MMRDA.

Construction on this 580 meters south bound bridge had begun in November last year. The idea is to finish construction and later wait for the rains to end. Only post-monsoon work on north bound structure will commence.

Kherwadi flyover is the last bridge that was to be erected to bypass several traffic junctions on the WEH and eventually reduce the overall commuting time for motorists between north-south Mumbai.

Transport activists have demanded a dedicated bus lanes on the WEH as well as on other arterial roads like EEH, Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road, etc. to strengthen public transportation systems in the metropolis of Mumbai.
