Swimming in pools maintained by the BMC is going to get costlier now. The civic body has decided to increase its membership fees by 10%.

The corporation has taken the decision in order to meet the annual operation and maintenance cost, referring to a circular issued by the municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte. "In order to ensure smooth operations of the pools, the commissioner has asked us to increase the fees by 10%. The hike will apply to both the Olympic and non-Olympic size pools," said a senior civic official.

The corporation has four swimming pools, out of which, three are operational. These include the lone operational Olympic-size, Mahatma Gandhi memorial Olympic swimming pool, besides Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Lion's municipal swimming pools (both non-Olympic size) at Kandivli and Ghatkopar respectively.

The General Arun Kumar Vaidya swimming pool, another Olympic-size facility, has been non-operational since 2007.

The charges for Olympic-size swimming pools will now be Rs3,025 from Rs2,750 annually, and the members would include staffers, students (below 16 years), corporators and senior citizens. Other members will be charged Rs4,840 from Rs4,400.

For members of non-Olympic swimming pools, the BMC will charge Rs2,910 from Rs2,640 annually. "We will have to ensure that all our staffers are trained for any kind of emergencies. During their training session we will not charge them. They will be allowed to practice beyond their duty hours," an official said.

In addition to regular membership charges, the BMC has proposed a 10% hike, if educational institutes reserve slots at the swimming pools. The per hour rate will be Rs7,330 from Rs6,660 for both Olympic and non-Olympic pools. If the institutes book an hour slot between 7pm to 8pm, then the charges will be Rs10,470 as compared to Rs9,510 last year

In case of film shoot (for an eight-hour schedule), the charges will be Rs32,670 vis-à-vis R 29,700 last year.

For video shoot (for a four-hour), the corporation mulls to recover Rs2,200 against Rs2,000.
