What’s your cultural quotient?

We asked a few downtown residents to tell us how culturally rich their neighbourhood is

What’s your cultural quotient?

SoBo’s CULTURAL DIVERSITY

South Mumbai defines the cultural diversity in Mumbai. Places such as the Jehangir Art Gallery, even today, resonate with every Mumbaikar despite the so-called developmental agenda that various governments have pushed for. From the huge number of bright vendors that line Colaba Causeway to the mesmerising Chor Bazaar, South Mumbai is full of interesting places that define cultural ethnicity.

LACK OF RECREATIONAL SPACES

While SoBo is definitely more culturally rich in terms of the number of museums, art galleries and heritage structures it boasts of, I do see a gap in the recreational aspect that these spaces have to offer. The youth today crave for more than knowing just the history behind a beautiful structure; there is a serious need to develop more activities centred around these structures in addition to art nights, food and culture-specific events, community gigs and more. There is certainly scope for a lot in this neighbourhood.

AN ARTIST'S HAVEN

I have grown up in Matunga (E) and this locality has grown along with me. I have seen it from being home to a lot of film actors like the Kapoors, Shobhna Samarth and Boman Irani to being an eating hub for South Indian delicacies. It also has Marathi play theatres and cinema halls in close vicinity. From a market selling exclusive vegetables, flowers and agarbattis to the Five Gardens area, everything is so close by that Matunga can be easily identified as one of the places that still belong to the old Mumbai. To add to this, people from our locality have recently started an event called One Matunga, which covers various sports and artistic activities on weekends. This is an ongoing event that aims at ensuring that Indian culture and unity are preserved.
