Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray insisted again that he does not believe in democracy. In an interview in his party newspaper Saamna on Friday, Thackeray spoke about his health and his take on the Sena interviewing aspiring political candidates.
You are looking nice...
Yes. I am looking nice, but I am not arrogant like others. I was hospitalised thrice. Initially, 10 days, then five days, and again five days. Finally, I had an angioplasty. Still, I cannot breath easily. But overall I am fine.
Your hair also looks black...
I am not aware why my hair is still black. My voice is also strong. When I was in hospital, I would joke with the doctors. They also liked it. The doctors rarely get patients who crack jokes.
Do you get enthusiastic during election time?
The way elections are fought in our country is dirty. I do not trust it. Also, the electronic voting machines can do any miracle. I am not the only one who says that. An engineer has proved to the election commission that the electronic voting machine can alter the results.
The campaign gets fiery only when you enter...
Why should only the Shiv Sena speak on every subject? Why can’t others speak? I become aggressive when the people become unresponsive. When the people themselves are fiery, I remain silent.
The election campaign has taken off...
A new system has been introduced in the Shiv Sena — the aspirant candidates. I never supported the idea. What is going on? This is not the Sena. I had a rule. The person who would lobby the most for a ticket, I used to always deny him one.
Then why was the tradition broken?
I think they [Uddhav and others] wants to take another way. I do not want to suppress them. But I will not tolerate it if anybody takes advantage of it. The Sena was never a democratic party.
