Voters have the power to change the system and they must: Anna Hazare

None Of The Above (NOTA) option may be a good start, but the voters deserve the Right to Reject, says anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare. In an interview with Santosh Andhale, the 77-year-old Gandhian shared his plans of touring the length and breadth of the country to raise awareness of the issue.

Voters have the power to change the system and they must: Anna Hazare

How do you see the current political situation?
As all political parties are contesting the elections on their own, they will come to know about their real strength. Most of these parties are greedy for power and money and are not bothered about the society and the country. There are some parties that have given tickets to people who faces allegations of corruption. Voters can choose the right candidate and throw tainted people out of the system, but they don't seem to understand their power. If they decide, any kind of change is possible.

What changes are needed in the current election system?
In the Lok Sabha elections, voters were given the option of casting negative votes. But NOTA is not sufficient, the government must introduce the Right to Reject option. If the number of people favouring NOTA in a particular constituency exceeds the number garnered by the highest vote-getter, the election for that seat should be cancelled. This will encourage people with clean track record to join politics. After the state elections, I will pursue this cause. I have already written a letter to the Election Commission on this.

What do you think of Modi campaigning across Maharashtra?
I won't say anything on this issue at the moment. We will talk about it once the polls are over.

What do you have to say about the Aam Aadmi Party and their politics?
Even as there is garbage in Delhi, I want to first clean my courtyard. Mahatma Gandhiji says if we want to develop our country, we should go to villages. If villages change, the country will also change.

How should a voter go about voting?
People should take a pledge that they will will vote for only those candidates who have a clean image, and also see if the candidate has the capacity to work for the people. They should not fall prey to cheap attractions. Voter is the king, and all MPs, MLAs and corporators are servants of the country.
