Traffic is the biggest problem: UPS Madan

Metropolitan Commissioner UPS Madan tells DNA that one of the major challenges BKC faces is the unbearable traffic. While Metro rail corridors planned through the stretch should help the situation, Madan says we cannot root out congestion altogether.

How are you planning BKC’s future?

Our plan is, of course, to have better connectivity to deal woth increasing traffic. We have planned four flyovers to decongest the area, and two Metro rail projects. With a convention centre, a bullet train terminal and the International Financial Centre coming up here, we have to work at creating numerous new entry and exit points.

What is the major challenge MMRDA is facing when it comes to the business district?

The number of vehicles that we are dealing with. It’s only going to rise from here on and the solution lies in the transport projects we are planning. One of them, the Metro corridor that connects the suburbs and the island city through south Mumbai, will control the number of vehicles.

MMRDA had requested offices in BKC to stagger work timings to avoid snarls. Has this worked?

People may find it logical and many have scattered the office hours by up to an hour, though not officially. So staggering has taken place but it is not considerable. To have a completely different timing, say from 1 pm to 9 pm, could be challenging for those coming from far suburbs. But offices are starting with what they can do.
