Tenders worth Rs1.90 crore have been floated for the demolition of illegal floors in the Campa Cola Compound. The proposal by the civic administration has been sent to the standing committee for approval. The civic body is all set to follow the Supreme Court order and start the demolition from November 12. In an interview to dna’s Geeta Desai, additional municipal commissioner Mohan Adtani clears the air about the demolition drive. Excerpts:
The BMC has been termed as a cruel-hearted authority for rendering so many people homeless, what do you have to say?
It may sound insensitive, but I am expected to execute my duties. I, as a human being, may have lot of emotions and sympathy. But as an official from the BMC – the authority which has been asked by the Supreme Court to do its duty – has to follow orders. If the BMC does not carry out its duty, it is criticised, if we do our job we are criticised.
Slums came up until 1995 are legalised. Those until 2000 are tolerated in case of few projects, then why not show any rationality for the residents who are tax payers and law abiding citizens.
I am not the right person to answer this. I don’t have any powers to change the law or take any such decision. Amending laws and bringing out any ordinance is in the hands of the state government.
Why no action has been taken against the builder and the developer?
The BMC has been in the process of dealing with the builder and the developer. The subject is with the building proposals department and the municipal commissioner. Only thing I can tell you is that the due course of action has been initiated against the developer. A court case is going on with the builder.
What precaution the authorities have taken for the safety of lower floors while demolishing the upper illegal ones.
We are issuing tender worth Rs1.90 crore and the contractor will have to ensure the safety. However, the internal demolition such as breaking walls of the flats will be done by us. We will also ensure that water tank demolished by us will be rebuilt.
What action you have suggested for the civic officials who have allowed the illegal structure for many years?
Our officials have taken all possible action against the illegal structure right from the beginning. We have issued them notices and penalised the builder and expected managing committee to pay fines. Nevertheless, all the necessary action will be initiated against the officers, if proven guilty.
