Most people unaware of LMD's powers, says state chief

The recent crackdown by the Legal Metrology Department (LMD) has unearthed various malpractices in several sectors that directly affect consumers. Sanjay Pandey, controller of LMD of Maharashtra state spoke to Somendranath Sharma about the kind of issues the department has to deal with:

Most people unaware of LMD's powers, says state chief

What are the duties of the LMD and how does it work?
Any weights and measures based on which transaction are made are covered by the LMD. If it is found that norms of the Local Metrology Act were violated, we take action accordingly. The Act was first introduced in 1932 and was amended in 2009.

Are companies not aware of LDM's role or they are they just ignoring the laws so they can indulge in corrupt practices?
I feel people are not aware in general about the total scope of the metrology department. Our website was not fully functional, but now it has become functional again. People who are affected can approach us online and express their grievances.

What action does LMD take when they find a company violating norms?
In case of a first-time offence, a fine is collected by our department. If the company is found to be repeatedly involved in violation of norms, we move court. The court can also sentence the accused to imprisonment if found guilty. The LMD also has powers of search and seizures.

Technology keeps changing. Is LMD's equipment capable of verify the functioning of new measurement technology or is it outdated?
Some of the equipment is outdated, but we have informed our parent department in Delhi about this and they would soon do something in this regard.
