Forcible possession will work better, faster than moving court: Yusuf Abrahani

Congress leader and ex-Mhada chairman Yusuf Abrahani, under the banner of Social Educational Welfare Association, which is an umbrella body of over 50 NGOs tried to justify his stand on the controversy surrounding Jogeshwari's Ismail Yusuf College in an interview with dna's Kanchan Srivastava. Excerpts:

Forcible possession will work better, faster than moving court: Yusuf Abrahani

Why don't you approach HC for a stay or a legitimate resolution of this issue than taking law into your hands?
We believe that this method (of forcible possession) will help us more than approaching court.

Why do you assume the outcome even before filing the petition?
I myself am an advocate and know how things work. By the time, we get a stay on allocation of land to other institutions, the government might start constructing the new institutes, which will then make things more difficult.

What do you plan to do with the property after getting 'forcible possession'?
We will ask the government to give it to a trust working for the Muslim community, for example the Anjuman-i-Islam, the organisation which was about to get the property during the Congress-NCP government. We don't mind if government gives it to any other trust or even the Ismail Yusuf Trust, which is doing good work.

Why do you think the property should be given to a Muslim trust? After all, the government is only establishing educational institutes which will cater to all communities.
Because Muslims are still backward, as is evident by the Sachar Committee report. A lot needs to be done for our youths on the education front. If we can establish more institutions within the Ismail Yusuf College premises, it will help Muslim youths get education.

But there is no dearth of seats in higher education institutions of Mumbai and even Maharashtra. In fact, 30-40% seats in engineering and other colleges remain vacant every year.
Good colleges like Saboo Siddik Engineering Institute don't have a single seat vacant. Moreover, we are looking at the future, when more Muslim youths will seek education.
