Last week a young man was beaten to death at a playground in Mulund when he let loose a barrage of invective after being hit by a cricket ball. The three players who beat him up were booked for murder. They deserve to be punished severely.
There was, however, another aspect to the case that wasn’t taken note of by the police. The slain young man was consuming alcohol at the ground with his friends. Drinking in public, sometimes openly, often surreptitiously, is quite common in the city. Young men and, sometimes, women think it cool to be sitting under the blue sky consuming alcohol. But it is a contravention of the law and when such instances come to light those involved must be penalised.
It is wrong to expect the rule of law to prevail when citizens keep breaking what they may consider to be inconsequential rules. One can’t selectively abide by the law. Besides, the era of Prohibition is long over and there are designated places where alcoholic drinks can be consumed legally. If only the young men had been playing at the ground instead of drinking....
