Ruckus in Maharashtra Assembly, 5 Congress MLAs suspended for 'hurting' governor

Devendra Fadnavis-led BJP government on Wednesday won the trust vote in Maharashtra assembly. The confidence motion was passed by voice-vote. Whereas, Shiv Sena's Eknath Shinde accorded the status of Leader of Opposition by the Speaker. 

However, Congress and Shiv Sena accused the speaker of being biased towards BJP and demanded that the government should prove majority again. 

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said, "It is a Black day for Maharashtra's democracy. We will meet Governor and will demand another round of trust vote." 

Attacking BJP, Shiv Sena leader Ramdas Kadam said, "On the First day the assembly did not work according to the rules. We will speak to NCP and also go to the Governor."

Hours before the 13-day-old BJP government was to seek a vote of confidence, the Shiv Sena had declared that it will vote against it in the Maharashtra Assembly. 

Earlier in the day, BJP legislator Haribhau Bagde was elected unopposed as Speaker of Maharashtra Assembly after Shiv Sena and Congress candidates withdrew their nominations.

Bagde's name was announced by Protem Speaker Jiva Pandu Gavit in the newly-constituted Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.

Bagde, the MLA from Phulambhari in Aurangabad district, was escorted to the Speaker's chair by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, NCP leader Ajit Pawar, Congress leader Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde and senior most legislator Ganpatrao Deshmukh of PWP.

Earlier in the day, Speaking to media, Sena leader Ramdas Kadam said, "Shiv Sena has decided to sit in opposition. We will vote against the trust vote,".

Whereas, BJP leader Eknath Khadse had express the confidance that they (BJP) have the numbers and will win the trust vote.

Five Congress MLAs were on Wednesday suspended from Maharashtra Assembly for two years for causing injury to Governor C Vidyasagar Rao when they tried to block his entry into the House to address a joint sitting of the bicameral legislature.

A resolution moved by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prakash Mehta seeking to suspend Rahul Bondre, Abdul Sattar, Amar Kale, Virendra Jagtap and Jaikumar Gore was passed by the the House by voice vote. The MLAs were protesting against "unconstitutional" manner in which the motion of confidence in the Devendra Fadnavis government was passed by voice vote instead of a division vote. While moving the resolution, Mehta said the five MLAs had got close to the Governor and apparently jostled with him, injuring his hand. Congress and Shiv Sena on Wednesday accused the speaker Haribhau Bagade of being biased towards BJP and demanded that the government should prove majority again. Shiv Sena MLAs led by opposition leader Eknath Shinde registered protest over the confidence motion being passed by voice vote and said it amounted to "strangling democracy". "The House should be run as per rules and the Constitution should not be trampled upon. The new government is strangulating democracy. BJP government led by Devendra Fadnavis wins trust vote in Maharashtra Assembly. 

The Devendra Fadnavis-led BJP government won the vote of confidence in the Maharashtra state assembly through a voice vote on Wednesday. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Haribhau Bagade was also elected as the new Maharashtra Assembly Speaker today. Shiv Sena leader Eknath Khadse has been reportedly accorded the status of Leader of Opposition by Bagade. Maharashtra: Will not take conditional support from any party, says BJP

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader GVL Narasimha Rao has said that the party will not take conditional support from any party for vote of confidence in the state assembly, which is take place in Mumbai on Wednesday. "Our government in Maharashtra will prove its majority on floor; we welcome anyone who will help us in development of the state. Shiv Sena slams BJP over NCP support, likens Sharad Pawar's party to mouse

Firing a fresh salvo ahead of Maharashtra BJP government's trust vote on Wednesday, Shiv Sena has warned its former ally that it will be disrespecting people's mandate if it takes support of NCP which "nibbled the state coffers like a mouse". "(Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra) Fadnavis once said that he wants to run the government for the people. The 41-member NCP of Sharad Pawar has already declared its support to the minority government. BJP has 121 MLAs in the House with effective strength of 287 and has claimed support of 7 Independent MLAs, three of Bahujan Vikas Aagadhi, besides some others.

Pawar on Tuesday said the MLAs will decide during the trust vote whether to vote in support of the government or abstain. In either case, the government will win the vote as 63-member Shiv Sena and Congress with 42 MLAs together cannot pull it down.

BJP has fielded Haribhau Bagde for the Speaker's post.

Gaikwad called on Pawar to seek support of his party and, according to Congress Legislature Party leader Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, the Maratha strongman told her that the party will take a call after due deliberation.
