The Dadar Government Railway Police (GRP) on Friday managed to establish an identity, albeit a vague one, of the man who had kidnapped an infant from outside Dadar station on March 9.

An officer of the Dadar GRP station said, “The kidnapper has been identified as ‘Anna’, a beggar from the Mahim slum colony. He has been missing since taking the infant away from his mother who was sleeping outside the station.”

During investigation, the GRP showed CCTV footage to beggars at the slum colony where several beggars identified the culprit as Anna (full name not known). He used to beg and has been staying at the slum colony with the beggars there for the past couple of years.

Suspected to be a South Indian, he was allegedly known to the victim. However, the other beggars did not have more information about him, said the officer and added that they had laid a trap at the slum colony to nab him but were unsuccessful. The GRP suspect the beggar gang to be behind the kidnap.

The incident took place around 6am last Saturday. The culprit took one-month-old Sallu when he was sleeping with his mother Parveen Sheikh, 30, and his three-year-old sister Sajida on the porch outside the station. The kidnap came to light only around 7.30pm when Parveen woke up and found him missing. She thoroughly searched the station premises for half an hour and then lodged a complaint at the GRP station.
