In a bid to improve traffic movement in the city, several new routes are being planned and executed by the MMRDA. However, the results only show lack of proper implementation.
An example of this is the Milan subway road overbridge (ROB), which is being built with the aim of connecting motorists to the Western Express Highway (WEH).

What the MMRDA hadn’t anticipated was that the incoming and outgoing traffic from the junction that connects the ROB and Dayal Das Road at Santa Cruz to the WEH would be chaotic, with six-way traffic movement. Grappling for a solution, the MMRDA then dumped the problem on the traffic police.

“We made slight changes in the traffic movement to and from the WEH from the ROB and have decided to install a signal at the junction to address the issue,” said Vivek Phansalkar, joint commissioner of police (traffic).

The ROB, which is likely to be opened for motorists by the first week of May, is finally nearing completion after the glitches were taken care of by the traffic police. An MMRDA official said, “There were some technicalities but a solution has been found.”

South-bound traffic on the WEH will have to take a right at Nehru Road and then a left towards Dayal Das Road to proceed to the ROB. North-bound traffic will not be allowed to take a U-turn for Milan subway.

“Delineators will be provided to separate the space for the merger of the north-bound traffic on the WEH from the road overbridge. The south-bound traffic from the subway will have to proceed towards the slip road on the WEH and take a U-turn,” Phansalkar added.
