In yet another case of abduction on the city’s railway premises, a month-old baby boy who was sleeping beside his mother was carried off by an unidentified man from Dadar station on the Central line in the wee hours of Saturday.

The incident took place at around 6.05am outside the ticket booking office at the main gate of Dadar railway station.

A beggar, Parveen Rahul Rai alias Parveen Sheikh, 33, came to the station at around 11pm on Friday, and decided to spend the night there with her children Sajida, 3, and Sallu, the month-old baby boy.

After having dinner, she went to sleep outside the booking office at Dadar (E). However, when she woke up at around 7.30am on Saturday, she found that her son wasn’t to be seen anywhere. After looking for him at the entire station premises, she lodged a complaint with the Dadar government railway police (GRP).

The GRP personnel immediately stepped up and launched a search for the missing baby, but to no avail. They then decided to go through footage from the closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed at the station entrance.

“While scanning the CCTV footage, the GRP personnel found an unidentified man picking Sallu up at around 6.05am, when the victim was fast asleep,” said Ravindra Dalvi, inspector, Dadar GRP station. He added, “So that no other suspects him, he sat near the mother, to make it look like he is her husband or a close relative.”

Inspector Dalvi said that GRP formed three teams — which have been sent to Haji Ali, Mahim Durgha and Babulnath Temple — in a bid to trace the baby. Besides, the abductor’s description has been sent to the city police as well as railway police, in addition to Thane and Navi Mumbai police.
