The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has started installing crash barriers on a pilot basis on a 2.5km stretch of road on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has started installing crash barriers on a pilot basis on a 2.5km stretch of road on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway.

“The crash barriers and safety ropes — also called Brifen rope barriers — are being put up on the median of the Mumbai–Pune Expressway on a pilot basis. Once we find out the durability of these barriers, the same will be replicated on the other dangerous stretches of the highway,” said a source within MSRDC. On March 4, DNA had reported that MSRDC is awaiting the consignment of safety ropes to come from Germany.

The work is currently being carried out on a 2.5-km-long stretch in Kamshet. “The pilot project will take two months to be completed and will cost Rs88 lakh,” added the official.
Once installed, these ropes will help stop vehicles land on the opposite lane, thus helping avoid a head-on collision.

If you feel sleepy, halt

It has been observed that majority of the accidents on the expressway are due to drivers falling asleep at night

In order to avoid situations like these, MSRDC is working on creating emergency parking bays between Lonavala and Pune
