Vijender Singh gets boxed in after heroin haul

Olympic bronze medallist Vijender Singh’s name cropped up following the recovery of 26kg heroin worth Rs130 crore from an NRI’s house in Mohali district in Punjab on Friday.
Vijender’s wife’s car was spotted outside the NRI’s flat in Zirakpur during the drug bust.

The police have arrested the NRI, Anup Singh Kahlon, who claimed that Vijender and Ram Singh, a national-level boxer, were his regular clients. 

“We recovered Vijender’s car a little distance away from Anup’s house. But there appears to be no link between the boxer and Anup,” said Hardyal Singh Mann, Fathegarh Sahib SSP.

Vijender, who won the bronze in boxing in Beijing Olympics (2008), denied knowing Anup. “I was in Mumbai for work when this incident took place. I have nothing to do with these people. My friends dropped me at the airport in my wife’s car. I don’t know how it reached outside that Zirakpur flat. I am shocked,” he said.

“If he (Anup) is a drug peddler, how can his word be trusted? If I abuse drugs, won’t I be caught in the doping tests? Even now, I am open to being tested if needed,” Vijender told the media.

Meanwhile, Vijender’s coach GS Sandhu told DNA: “The car was being used by Ram Singh. Vijender was not even close to the actual scene all this while. Anyone who knows Vijender cannot point finger at him.” The boxer’s brother Manoj also denied Anup’s allegations. “Vijender was not there at the time and we deny his involvement completely.”
