The Nirmal Nagar police arrested a 59-year-old man on Monday for allegedly raping his 19-year-old daughter repeatedly over the past nine years.

The incident came to light after the man assaulted his younger daughter too. Determined not to let her father abuse her sister, the frightened teenager confided in a friend and later approached the police.

The arrested accused works as a liftman in a building in Behrampada, Bandra (East). He resides on the terrace of the same building with his four children -- two sons aged 24 and 22 and two daughters aged 19 and 11. His wife died around 16 years ago, when the victim was three.

“The victim said when she was 10 years old her father started sexually abusing and raping her. She often tried to stop the abuse but was beaten by her father. She told her brothers but they ignored and did not help her,” said a police officer.

“When Shaikh assaulted his younger daughter, the victim tried to stop him, but he threatened her with dire consequences. She was upset that her life had already been spoiled by him and now he was spoiling her sister’s too,” the officer added.

She then told a friend who convinced her to approached the police.

“Based on the victim’s complaint we arrested the accused and produced him in court. He is in police custody. We asked the victim if she wants to be sent to the Dongri remand home but she decided to stay at home and take care of her sister,” said senior inspector Ramesh Khakale.
