A 50-year-old Nepalese watchman was found murdered with his throat slit on Friday in a Santa Cruz housing society where he worked.
The police have registered a case of murder against an unidentified person. They are questioning many Nepalese watchmen, including Pavan Kumar Jha, a former one who quit the job about a year ago and came to the city a day before the murder.
The police said the deceased, Khadak Singh, had been working at Zainex Apartment, opposite Mumbai University, in Kalina for the past two months.
“Jha came to Mumbai on Thursday and after speaking to a few residents of the building, he was allowed to sleep on the premises,” said a police officer of the Vakola police station.
Jha claims he found Singh murdered around 12.30am on Friday. “He immediately informed residents of the society,” the officer added. Jha fled before the police arrived but was later tracked down.
“During investigation, we came to know that there is a dispute in the society so some of the flats are under the registrar, who had hired Singh two months ago,” another officer said, adding that they will look into all possible angles.
Senior police inspector of Vakola police station, RG Pardeshi said, “We are questioning a few people on the basis of suspicion, but don’t have any lead as of now.”
