A police constable posted at Matunga police station allegedly cheated a woman by taking money from her on the pretext of marrying her.
He is married but had hidden this from the woman.
Sachin Jaiswal was recently suspended by the deputy commissioner of police, zone, IV.
The constable had allegedly threatened the woman of dire consequences if she approached the police.
To intimidate her, he had dropped names of politicians and senior police officers whom he claimed to know.
According to a senior police officer, Jaiswal met the woman (name withheld) a few years ago.
Later, Jaiswal told her that he would marry her and took money from her many times on the pretext of buying a house in Panvel, Navi Mumbai.
“When the woman realised that she was being cheated, she warned Jaiswal that she would lodge a police complaint against him. To intimidate her, Jaiswal claimed that her complaint would be left unheard as he is close to several politicians and senior police officers. He made all efforts to ensure that the woman doesn’t file a complaint,” said a police officer, requesting anonymity.
However, the woman gave a written complaint against Jaiswal, after which a verification was initiated against him.
“The statements of Jaiswal and the woman were taken and prima facie it was learnt that Jaiswal had taken money from her. He had also put pressure on her not to file a complaint against him,” the officer said.
After the allegations were verified, a departmental inquiry was initiated against Jaiswal.
He has been suspended until the inquiry is complete, said a police source.
“This is a serious allegation. An inquiry has been initiated into the matter. If Jaiswal is found guilty, then appropriate action would be taken,” said an officer.
