Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel arrested a man on Monday for allegedly slapping and abusing a woman commuter over a minor quarrel on the foot overbridge (FOB) at Dadar station. He was later handed over to the Government Railway Police (GRP) for further investigation.
The incident took place around 10am when Nalasopara resident Mohammed Farooq Mohamed Sayyed, 38, who alighted from a Churchgate fast local, was on his way to his workplace, a garment factory in Dadar. On the FOB, he accidentally pushed the woman due to the rush on the bridge.
The woman was offended and it turned into a quarrel, with both of them abusing each other. She allegedly slapped him and he in turn, in fit of anger, allegedly slapped her as well. The woman yelled for help, after which a crowd gathered around them and started thrashing Sayyed.
“Noticing the commotion, the two RPF personnel patrolling the bridge intervened. They rescued Sayyed from the people and brought him and the woman to the RPF office at Dadar,” said Rajendra Rupnawar, senior divisional security commissioner, RPF, Western Railway.
“Sayyed was booked under section 110 (creating a nuisance in a public place) of the Bombay Police Act as the woman refused to give them a written complaint against him,” senior police inspector of Mumbai Central GRP, Shivaji Shinde. The Mumbai central railway court released him after he paid a fine of Rs300.
