The crime branch arrested a 23-year-old man on Saturday for allegedly harassing several women by making lewd calls with a stolen mobile phone.

According to the police, the accused Sudarshan Nath had allegedly stolen his former employer’s phone to call unknown women. They received a few complaints from women saying that they were receiving obscene calls from an unknown number.

“We found that the number from which the calls were being made was registered under the name of Mehraj Sansara, who runs Shahpur restaurant at Dockyard Road,” said a police officer on the condition of anonymity.

Sansara told the police that the number did belong to him but his phone was stolen on November 14 last year. “He said he had kept his phone on a table in the hotel and realised after some time that it was missing. His employee Nath was also missing from that day,” added the officer.

Sansara didn’t file a complaint as the phone wasn’t too expensive. The police kept the number on surveillance and traced the caller to Kamathipura area of Nagpada on Saturday. They seized one mobile phone and four SIM cards from Nath.

“One of the four cards belonged to Sansara, but the phone wasn’t his. The seized phone contains phone numbers of several women. Investigations are on in the case and we suspect that the remaining cards were also stolen,” said the officer.
