Two people, including a woman, were arrested on Saturday for allegedly assaulting an on-duty woman police officer in Cuffe Parade around 3pm.
The police said that the woman constable, Mangal Varang, heard a girl screaming in a slum nearby. She rushed to the spot where she found a woman named Suman Mane (48) fighting with a young girl. She tried to pacify both the parties.
Angry at her intervention, Mane started slapping and kicking Varang. In the meantime the other police woman and an assistant sub inspector who reached the spot and took Mane to Cuffe Parade police station.
Later, one Eric Dhatingra reached the police station and started questioning the cops’ decision to bring Mane to the police station. Dhatigra claimed he was associated to a political party following which he tried to leave the police station with Mane.
“We have arrested them for assault and criminal intimidation. They will be produced in the court on Sunday,” said Janardhan Kharat, senior inspector of Cuffe Parade police station.
