When the residents of Arzoo Apartments in Laxmi Nagar, Nalasopara, found a newborn baby boy draped in a dupatta and dumped in a secluded spot on Friday night, they immediately informed the police and rushed the baby to Alliance Hospital for treatment.

“Around 9pm, we found the dogs in the locality barking at something. We found it was a newborn baby with head injuries,” said Sapna Vaidh, a resident. The residents suspect an unidentified woman in her mid-20s to be behind the act, as she was seen walking around in the area prior to the baby being found.

“We had seen a woman strolling in the area, but at that time, we didn’t find her movements suspicious and ignored her. Half an hour later, we found the baby,” said Omkar Shirke, another resident.

Dr Sunil Joshi, medical superintendent, Alliance Hospital, said, “We have taken adequate measures and are treating the baby. He has severe head injuries and is critical as he was kept exposed on a chilly winter night.”

Girish Dighavkar, assistant inspector, Nalasopara police station, said they are investigating. “We might have him shifted to KEM Hospital if needed,” he added.
