The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) has decided to resurface the city’s landmark Marine Drive using cement concrete instead of a combination of cement concrete and asphalt mechanised mastic as planned earlier.
With the change in plans, resurfacing expenses will exceed Rs100 crore from the Rs65 crore which was estimated earlier. Civic authorities said tenders are expected to be floated next month and the work is likely to begin in March."IIT-Mumbai suggested that the road should be resurfaced using cement concrete road only. So we will dig and resurface the entire stretch with a 50 mm thick layer," said additional municipal commissioner Aseem Gupta.
A senior civic official said if the earlier planned technique of white tapping was used, the road would have been dug up later by service providers. Therefore the institute suggested that the entire stretch should be concretised which would ensure longevity as well.
