A newborn boy, believed to be five days old, was found abandoned on a street in Thane (West) on Monday morning.
The infant, who was bawling incessantly, was found at Chandani, Koliwada by a resident of Naupada area. The child has been sent to Thane Civil Hospital for medical care.
The Thane Nagar police have registered a case of abandonment against the unidentified baby’s parents. This is yet another case of abandoned infants – most of newborn girls – being found in the metropolis.
The police said that a 50-year-old teacher, Sanjay Sule, found the baby crying near Datta Mandir around 7.15am and alerted the control room of the Thane police. The control relayed the information to the Thane Nagar police station in whose jurisdiction the child was found.
Senior Inspector Chandrakant Thorat said that investigations are on to determine whether the child was left there their by its parents or some caretaker.
“The hospital authorities have kept him in an incubator,” said Thorat, adding that a case of abandonment of a child under 12 years has been registered under Section 317 of the Indian Penal Code.
