A 63-year-old woman was hammered to death by a youth she considered her son in her ground-floor Thane apartment on Wednesday night. He also decamped with a gold necklace weighing 6.5 tolas she had on her.
Maya Arvind Bahulekar lived with her son Vaibhav, daughter Sonali, son-in-law Paresh Thakkar, who is unemployed, and grandson Dhawal.
Around 5pm on Wednesday, graphic designer Anil Raibole, 34, a regular at the Bahulekar household and who Maya considered her son, went to her house. During another visit at 8.30pm, he picked up a hammer lying nearby and hit Maya, who was alone at home, on the cheeks. He then struck five blows on her head before fleeing with the gold necklace Maya had on her.
Vaibhav, 36, found Maya in a pool of blood when he returned from work. “The lights were switched off and nobody was at home,” said KP Raghuvanshi, Thane police commissioner. He took her to the Thane civil hospital where she was declared dead on admission.
“Raibole was arrested on Thursday and has been booked for murder,” Raghuvanshi said. He is unemployed and has a debt of Rs1.25 lakh. The investigation has also revealed that Maya and Paresh would have quarrels as he was unemployed. “Paresh promised Rs50,000 to Raibole if he killed Maya. We are questioning Sonali,” a police officer said.
