Travellers from the city wanting to visit the picturesque Maldives, could now fly directly to the country.
On Friday, the Maldivian Airways flew their first direct flight to the capital Male, keeping in mind the increase in demand of tourists wanting to travel from Mumbai. “Maldives is promoting medical tourism in a big way. It has even tied up with several high-end hospitals to help their cause,” said a Maldivian tourism officer.
Located to the south-west of India, the country attracts a huge chunk of honeymooners. As per the statistics with the tourism ministry of Maldives, the number of visitors from India is increasing by 20% every year; a considerable part of which comes from Mumbai and its nearby cities.
Travelling to other cities to catch a flight to Male not only incurs an extra expenditure but is time-taking. The airport officials said the flights will fly thrice a week to and fro. The operation is being carried on the newly acquired Airbus 320.
Direct services are also being started from Chennai.
Maldives located in the Indian Ocean is the smallest nation in Asia. It has pristine water bodies, large greenery cover and high-end resorts and hotels.
