It looks like Mumbai is in a race to appropriate the tag of the city of suicides. In just 48 hours since Friday, four residents, including a 19-year-old college student, killed themselves.
It began with Priyanka Lokhande, a first-year management studies student, hanging herself at her house in Malwani on Friday night. The police said she had failed in her examinations last year and was under tremendous pressure to clear the papers this time around. The trigger, claimed a friend, was the recent break-up with her boyfriend.
The next night, Tahira Sultan Sayyed, 60, also from Malwani, who had been suffering from various ailments, too, hanged herself at her home. Hours later, 22-year-old Ranaram Solanki from Malad (E) ended his life the same way. No suicide note was found.
On Sunday, Rajnish Prajapati, also 22, a domestic help jumped off the terrace of a building in Prabhadevi after reportedly being overcome with guilt for stealing Rs52,000 from his employers.
