Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has asked the MMRDA to recover penalty and compensation from contractors for accidents that took place this year at its ongoing construction sites, officials said.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) has recovered Rs10 lakh from contractors as penalty for the accident at the airport road station on the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar metro project, which killed one labourer and injured 11 others, they said.
Similarly, Rs 10 lakh has been recovered from contractors of the J P Road bridge for compensating the kin of a labourer killed due to the bridge collapse.
At Asalfa, two school children died and MMRDA recovered Rs five lakh from the contractor for compensating the kin of the two children and another rs ten lakh as fine.
Similarly, a compensation of Rs five lakh each has been recovered from contractors for three different accidents on the Versova, Andheri, Ghatkopar section, in which three persons had died.
Similarly, there were two accidents on the monorail project, in which two labourers had died and the contractors have been penalised for Rs36.5 lakh.
Contractor of the Lalbag flyover has been fined Rs25 lakh and the consultant Rs five lakh for the accident soon after the flyover was opened to the public, they said.
