On Sunday, the Union Park Residents Association (UPRA) launched a radio campaign on its community radio Jago Mumbai 90.8 FM.

After film director Yash Chopra died of dengue on Sunday, Khar residents have stepped up their campaign on radio to create awareness among citizens.

On Sunday, the Union Park Residents Association (UPRA) launched a radio campaign on its community radio ‘Jago Mumbai’, 90.8 FM. The radio station, launched on May 1, 2010, can be heard between Mahim and Andheri, Lokhandwala.

“The programme aims to create awareness among citizens and how to protect themselves from the disease. Jago Mumbai can also be heard on the internet on www.jagomumbairadio.com,” said Bharati Kakkad, secretary of UPRA.

Anchored by Kakkad, the programme which was a talk show with the local pest control officer was aired on Sunday at 10am and 5pm. “We have prepared capsules in English and Hindi to be aired on radio 4 to 6 times a day. We will air the talk show again on Saturday and Sunday at 10am and 5pm,” said Kakkad.

The UPRA has been carrying out surveys for the past three years to check mosquito breeding in the area.

“Last year’s survey carried out with the BMC showed that the mosquito breeding has reduced in the area. We will write to all housing societies reminding about it in 2-3 days,” said Kakkad.
The Advanced Locality Management members from Bandra (W), Khar (W) and Santa Cruz (W) have decided to accompany the pest control officials to create awareness about dengue.

“This is in case society members refuse to allow them inside their premises,” said Anandini Thakoor, chairperson of H West federation. Officials from the H (West) ward office said the pest control officials have started visiting the suspected hot spots. After they finish inspecting the spots, the officials will go door to door to talk to residents.
