'Triple Frontier' has its moments.

Story:
Triple Frontier is a story of five former US Special Forces operatives who go deep in the jungle, south of the border, to rob a drug lord. A heist to make money off ill-gotten gains. They manage to rob him, but greed gets the better deal and these band of brothers-turned-bandits begin an escape journey that tests their relationships with each other and the money they've stolen.
Review:
Director Chandor, in his projects so far (Margin Call, A Most Dangerous Year), has explored how humans deal with their relationship with the money. Triple Frontier is no exception. This aspect is the strongest character in this intense movie. Otherwise, despite the beautiful cinematography and the presence of five well-built, no-hair-out-of-place men on screen, the story falters and makes for uneasy viewing.
One of the biggest issue with Triple Frontier is the lack of characterisation. Apart from Ben Affleck's 'Redfly' (in spite of being retired, they still call each other the nicknames they got while serving in the army), who has two families to provide for and no money, there is very little we know about the men in this group. This makes it difficult to associate with their cause. What will they do with the money if they are successful? We know Redfly is sending his kid to college, what about the others? There's little to no information about the friendship these men have. What is keeping them together?
It is because of questions like these the movie fails to give you someone to root for. But Chandor, who co-wrote the story with Mark Boal, makes sure there's plenty of drama to keep you distracted from the shallow bonding. The heist goes ahead smoothly, it's the escape that takes you on a rollercoaster ride. The lows come when all the men are speaking in the same tone, repeating each other no matter what the situation. The highs come when they have to fight against nature because their greed is too big to ignore.
Triple Frontier will feel like deja vu to those who have been following Narcos and other similar shows and documentaries. But Roman Vasyanov's cinematography makes sure the movie leaves a mark of sorts with its stunning picturisation of the Andes.
