'Maska' Story:

Determined to make it in Bollywood, an aspiring young actor played by Prit Kamani considers turning his back on the beloved Irani cafe run by his family for generations.

'Maska' Review:

Irani Cafes are a part of Mumbai legacy and will always be. Though due to the rise of Starbucks and other coffee shops, they have been struggling to meet the ends. This has led to the shutting of many Irani Cafes in the city. However, there are a few regular customers who no matter what relish the tastiest Bun Maska and a cup of Irani chai. 'Maska' is about that legacy which the owner played by Manisha Koirala wants to live up to. She is a widow, who has a young son played by Prit Kamani. He is an aspiring actor and doesn't want to follow the footsteps of his father and grandfathers on running the Irani cafe.

Rumi (Prit) gets help and support from Nikita Dutta (Mallika) who tells him to make his own identity rather than become a cafe owner. On the other hand, Manisha (Diana) is a helicopter mom who wants her son to be her side and help her during her old age. She believes in legacy and hasn't even given up her dead husband's belongings like his clothing, shoes, watches and more. Well, those are her birthday gifts for her son.

Being a millennial, Rumi believes in being rebellious and doesn't want to help his mom in looking after the cafe. On the other hand, there comes another millennial, who wants to show this beautiful legacy to the world by making a coffee table book. Both poles apart from the same generation and yes practical too.

What makes Maska very special is Manisha, who nails it as a Parsi mom with her look, dialect and body language too. She has adapted the whole mannerisms well and it's a visual treat to see her. Talking about Prit, he makes the struggling actor feel real and also show how many young people don't value their parents' perseverance, struggle and more.

But Maska lacks in the storyline as it's something which is done and dusted but this time the theme is Irani cafes. The plus points are the charm of Mumbai city which is being currently missed by Mumbaikars during the lockdown. Yes, the songs are also foot-tapping and soothing with a blend of Hinglish together.

The way they have shown the food will increase your hunger pangs. In short, only the lockdown will save the film and yes Manisha Koirala too.

However, don't miss Javed Jaffrey, who showed that he will always be a charmer.

Verdict: Manisha Koirala is the right maska in this not-so-fresh bun.
