Yahoo! seems to be making it a habit to junk India focused social networking projects only to start new ones, that too every September.
After it pulled the plug on its beta stage social networking site Mash in September 2008, Yahoo! India has now pressed ctrl+alt+del on its replacement, SpotM.
SpotM will be succeeded by “Guru”, sources close to the development told DNA Money, adding that Yahoo has not totally abandoned its ambitions for an India-focused social networking site despite the repeated false starts.
“After careful consideration, Yahoo! will no longer offer SpotM, a communications service that we experimented with in India,” a Yahoo! India spokesperson confirmed when reached for an official confirmation.
Yahoo! India spokesperson, however, did not comment on Guru or any subsequent plans for social networking. “Yahoo! India has not given up on with the social networking concept and will now replace SpotM with Guru. Drawing from the experiences of Facebook, Yahoo will look to make a common theme in its social networking sites with minor adjustments for specific geographies,” the source added.
