MUMBAI: Pharma firm Wockhardt Ltd will launch amlodipine tablets in US market.
The drug is used in treating hypertension and other related cardiac ailments, the company informed the Bombay Stock Exchange in a communique.
The tablets to be marketed would be in strengths of 2.5 mg, 5 mg and 10 mg amlodipine besylate, it said.
Amlodipine is the generic name for the brand Norvasc, sold in the US by Pfizer Inc.
"Wockhardt is gaining a very strong position in several other cardiovascular products, like Enalapril and Captopril. With Amlodipine, company will reinforce our robust cardiovascular portfolio ", the company's Chairman Habil Khorakiwala said.
"This rapid increase in our US product portfolio is enabling us to synergistically gain market share across products," he said.
The US market for amlodipine tablets is worth about $ 2.6 billion (Rs 10,532.6 crore) equivalent to 1.7 billion tablets.
The amlodipine tablets are manufactured at the US FDA certified formulation plant at Waluj, Maharashtra. The product was developed in-house.
The shares of the company closed 1.49 per cent up at Rs 400.70 on the BSE.
