Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries, remains the richest Indian by a long shot. With a net worth of $34.8 billion, his fortune has doubled since March 9, 2009, tangoing a 108% growth in the Sensex.
Sunil Mittal, chairman of Bharti Enterprises, is No. 2 with a net worth of $16.5 billion.
An 11% appreciation in the rupee against the US dollar has also meant dollar billionaires in India have more than doubled from 17 to 46 in the last 8 months.
The Sensex rose from 8,160.40 on March 9 to 16,998.78 on November 18. In the same period, the rupee has risen from Rs51.88 to Rs46.22 against the dollar.
Azim Premji, chairman of Wipro, comes third on the list. His net worth nearly quadrupled from $4.6 billion to $16.3 billion. Anil Ambani’s wealth also doubled to $14.9 billion, placing him at No. 4, followed by Anil Agarwal of Vedanta Resources with $14.5 billion.
