One of the latest entrants in the state's telecom sector, Videocon has 'cleaned up' 4.15 lakh of its Gujarat customers in the last six months. With services introduced in May 2010, the company had witnessed a multi-fold growth and increased its customer base to 16.81 lakh by April 2011.
But from then onwards, to maintain a quality customer-base, the company had made a strategy to clean up its subscribers. In the last six months, the company has slashed 4.15 lakh of its 16.81 subscribers in April 2011 bringing the figure to 12.66 lakh in September 2011.
In September itself, Videocon deactivated 58,000 of its subscribers in the state, while nationally the company reducing 1.13 lakh customers, reveals subscribers' data released by Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI).
"It is a conscious decision. We have not lost the customer base but cleaned up inactive subscribers from the Gujarat circle," said chief marketing officer, Videocon Mobile Services, Sunil Tandon. However, the company is confident of breaking even within the next six months.
"As we are the latest entrants, we have installed the latest mobile technology in which the cost is comparatively lesser against conventional infrastructure. Our base tower stations incur less cost because of which we were able to pass on the benefit to our customers," said director of Videocon Mobile Services, Arvind Bali.
With its GSM operations in 17 circles across the country, Videocon has opted to not participate in the 3G auction. "Worldwide, 3G is a failure and the same was expected in India. So we have decided to not to get into 3G. But we are keen for LTE or 4G technology which will be much faster and even more successful," said Bali.
Videocon is expecting the launch of the next generation mobile technology - 4G or LTE - by the end of 2012. "We are expecting auctions for 4G to take place in 2012 with companies beginning to roll out the technology," said Bali.
Bali and Tandon were in the state to launch the economical on net (Videocon to Videocon intra-circle) offer. "Targetting on net customers in Gujarat, we are offering unlimited calls for a month to local Videocon numbers at Rs59. We have announced the new plan and competitors will soon follow," said Tandon.
