Tessera loses patent fight with Acer, others

Tessera lost a round in a patent fight with Acer Inc and other companies over a technology for chip packaging, the US International Trade Commission said on Tuesday.

The full commission upheld a decision by an ITC administrative law judge who had ruled in August that Tessera patents were not violated by Acer or by Elpida Memory Inc, Nanya Technology, Powerchip Semiconductor Corp, ProMOS Technologies Inc and others.

In May, the ITC ruled that Qualcomm, Motorola and others infringed Tessera's patents for methods to package semiconductor chips so they are protected inside portable devices.

The trade commission is a popular venue for patent litigation because it can issue an order prohibiting importation of goods that infringe on patents.
