Samsung launches series of 'Galaxy brand' smartphones

Samsung launches series of 'Galaxy brand' smartphones

Aiming for a 40% market share in the growing smartphones market in India, telecommunication major Samsung India Electronics today launched a series of phones in the "Galaxy brand" enabled with the Android 2.3 operating system provided by Google.
   
With the launch of these phones, the company presently has 15 smartphones in this category, Samsung India Electronics, country-head Ranjit Yadav told reporters here.
 
Samsung currently has a market share of 15% in the smartphone category.
 
Launching the phones, Ranjit Yadav said,  "We intend to reach a 40% market share in the smartphones category this year."
 
The price of smartphones range from Rs10,500 for the Galaxy Pop CDMA model to Rs29,590 for the top-end Nexus-S model targeted at the high-end users.
   
Affirming that their mobile phones from Samsung would also be enabled with "Bada" and Windows 7.0 operating systems besides the Android, he said some smartphones would be manufactured at their Noida facility while some were imported from Korea.
   
On expansion of Tablet PCs, he said they would be launching upgraded versions of the Tablets under "Galaxy" brand in June this year. Presently, Samsung offers 7.1" tablet in the brand name Galaxy.
 
"In November 2010 we launched the Galaxy 7.1" tablet. We will be launching the Galaxy 8.9" and 10.1" models in June this year," Samsung Electronics vice-president (Marketing) - mobile business Asim Warsi said.
    
He said with the launch of the two Tablet PCs, they would be the only company in India to offer three Tablet PCs. "Tablet PCs are growing at a rapid rate. Last year the tablet market was 2.50 lakh units. We expect it to reach 7.50 lakh this year. Our aim is to have 50% market share in Tablet PCs," he told PTI.
   
Currently Samsung Electronics holds a minimal marketshare in India as their first product was launched only few months back.
   
Samsung Electronics India last year reported revenues of $3.5 billion. This year the company is expecting to report $5 billion, he added. The smart phones launched today range from Galaxy Pro, Ace, Fit, Pop,Galaxy Pop CDMA and the top end Nexus S.
