Rakesh Mohan to steer panel on transport policy

To promote competitive pricing in the transport sector the government has set up a high-level committee to develop National Transport Development Policy, headed by Rakesh Mohan, former deputy governor of Reserve Bank of India.

The committee will assess the transport requirement of the Indian economy keeping in mind the projected GDP growth in the next two decades. The performance of the public private partnership (PPP) in the transport sector will also be reviewed by the committee and it will suggest ways to weed out bottlenecks in the PPP model.

It will also examine the laws, rules and regulations related to various modes of transport and traffic to suggest measures for strengthening their enforcement.

The committee will also recommend a comprehensive and sustainable policy for meeting the transport requirements, keeping in view the comparative resource cost advantages of various modes of transport— road, rail, air, shipping and inland water transport.
