Bangalore: The prices of essential commodities, vegetables and fruits will soar again as the production has reduced over the last three years. RC Lahoti, president, Bangalore Wholesale Grain Merchants Association, said, "There is a rising demand for essential commodities, but their production in the state has fallen. This is because the land under cultivation of these commodities has reduced over the last five years. The recent floods in North Karnataka has worsened the shortage."
President of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene Kodihalli Chandrashekar said, "Essentials like wheat, jowar, tur, red chillies and onions are mostly grown in North Karnataka. But the floods have ruined many fields."
Over the last three months, prices of 95% of the essential commodities have risen by 5% each month, with prices of sugar, tur dal, wheat and rice most affected. It is likely that the prices will rise by another 30% in the next three months.
