The hydro electricity capacity addition during the 11th Plan (2007-12) may be 34% lower than the target, according to a mid-term review.

The government had set a target of 15,627 mw of hydro generation capacity addition for the 11th Plan, of which only 10,347 mw is may be completed. The hydro capacity addition target accounts for 19% of the total power capacity addition target of 78,700 mw for the 11th Plan period.

“Hydro-power projects face more difficulties as compared with thermal power projects. Even though there will be slippages in achieving the targets for the 11th Plan, the performance would be better than the previous plan,” said senior official in the power ministry.

The country achieved 54% of its hydro capacity addition target in the 10th Plan.

During the first nine months of 2009-10, capacity addition in the hydro sector was just 39 mw as against the target of 845 mw.
“The government has set up an inter-ministerial group to evolve a policy framework that accelerates the development of hydropower in the north-east,” the official added.
