Ogilvy, Zoozoo steal the thunder at Effie

There were no surprises at the Effie 2009, with Oglivy India taking the maximum accolades and medals home backed by some memorable campaigns including Vodafone Zoozoo, the Sprite Seedhi Baat, No Bakwaas campaign, Center Fresh (Keep the Mouth Locked), Limca (Fresh Ho Jao), Bajaj Pulsar (Pulsar Mania), Pond’s (The Cinderella Effect: The Journey from Mass to Class), Sakshi (Move to Tomorrow), and Tata Sky+ (Tata Sky+ Launch).

Ogilvy won a total of 13 medals - totalling to a tally of 120 points (as compared to its last year’s tally of nine medals and a score of 100 points) to become the Agency of the Year, beating JWT, which could only manage 50 points.

Vodafone’s Zoozoo’s success ensured Vodafone Essar was adjudged the Effie Client of the Year. Out of the 13 medals won by Ogilvy, 5 were for the Vodafone Zoozoo campaign, including two golds.

The 9th edition of the Effie Awards, one of the most prestigious event of the Advertising Club Bombay, was attended by more then 800 professionals from the advertising, marketing, media and research fraternity who saw 40 Effie Trophies being presented to the worthy winners.

JWT’s finished a distant second in the final tally, with ‘Teach India’ bagging the Grand Effie for Integrated Advertising and also the Yahoo Big Idea Chair award. The agency won a silver Effie for its ‘Aam Aadmi Ke Badhte Kadam’ campaign for the Indian National Congress.

The audience went into a frenzy when Tata Tea - Jaago Re! of Lowe Lintas bagged the People’s Choice award for the best case study presented at the Rama Watumull Auditorium, Mumbai. Lowe Lintas, finished third, winning one gold medal and two medals each of silver and bronze. Apart from the Gold for Jaago Re! Lowe won the two silvers for the Axe (Call Me) and Idea Cellular (What an Idea!) campaigns, while the bronze Effies were for the Havells (Shock Laga) and Tata Tea (Jaago Re!) campaigns.

Mudra finished fourth in the rankings, having won three silver Effies for Union Bank of India, Shell Foundation and Economic Times, all in the Corporate Advertising category.

1Rediffusion won four bronzes for Airtel and Kaya Skin Clinic, to occupy the fifth spot in the rankings.

Amongst the various personalities who were present at the event were Maitri Kumar, head marketing, HSBC; Pratap Bose, secretary, Ad Club; Anil Dua, senior V-P sales & marketing, Hero Honda; Ajay Chandwani, joint.secretary, Ad Club; Bharat Avlani, regional IBC director & Unilever Asia AMET; Pranesh Misra, managing committee member, Ad Club; Bobby Pawar, chief creative officer, Mudra Group; Mahesh Chauhan, Group CEO, Rediffusion Y&R; Madhukar Kamath, managing director, Mudra Group; S K Palekar, managing committee member, Ad Club; Piyush Pandey, executive chairman, creative director - South Asia, Ogilvy & Mather; K V Sridhar, national creative director, Leo Burnett; Sanjay Tripathy, executive V-P marketing, HDFC Standard Life; Colvyn Harris, CEO, JWT among others.
