Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad: The diamond cutting and polishing industry of Ahmedabad is facing an acute shortage of workers. The units in the city, which used to employ around 1.5 lakh people a couple of years back, are currently being run with only 70,000 workers. There is for at least 30,000 more in the near future, insiders say.
"The workforce was eroded by the global recession, and that has caused the shortage of workers. Besides, there has been an exodus of workers to greener pastures," said Magan Patel, the treasurer of the Ahmedabad Diamond Association. "Some of them have found jobs in other sectors, such as embroidery and agriculture. Many are doing well there and are not keen to return to the diamond industry."
A BJP MLA and diamond businessman, Vallabh Kakadia, said, "The diamond industry faced a mass exodus of workers because of the economic downturn last year. The shortage will continue till these workers return, or new people are found."
According to experts, the industry does not attract many workers because it offers low pay. "The average income of a diamond polisher in Ahmedabad is around Rs5,000 per month," said Narsi Patel, the president of the Vivekanand Diamond Association. "A worker can easily earn more in embroidery units, by running a small business, or from agriculture back home in Saurashtra or North Gujarat." He added that the low pay deterred even other prospective workers.
While industry experts believe the labour shortage will become more severe, diamond units are trying hard to retain their staff and find new workers.
"This strategy is working well, and other units may follow their lead," Kakadia said. "Workers who left last year will also start coming back if wages are increased." Surat, which polishes eight out of 10 diamonds mined globally, is also facing a severe shortage of workers.
